Apple Mac support case study

A local greeting card designer and manufacturer needed a solution to ensure their designers access to file servers speed was increased and filename issues fixed. They also wanted better collaboration so they could share calendars and access to email via the web and on smartphones.

The Problem

We were asked by a local design and manufacturing company if we could provide Mac support for their Nottingham office.

Their designers were complaining that their access to network files was slow - they were copying them to their desktop at the start of the day - and copying them back at the end.

They were having file corruption issues with any file with mac characters (bullet points etc..) and we were being asked to restore files on a regular basis.

They were using mac mail to access email which was configured to download email by pop3 which meant they had no way to share calendars.

Their sales team were keen to be able to read emails and appointments when they were away from the office.

Morale was low as the network systems that were in place were either too slow, were crashing and corrupting documents or just didn't have the funtionality that the users required.

The Business Problem

Slow mac file server access, document corruption, file name issues and poor collaboration.

Our Solution

ExtremeZIP deployed to increase file access speed and fix all filename issues. Exchange 2007 deployed to aid collaboration and email.

Key Benefits

File access 5x faster, shared calendars, better email access and no more filename issues.

Our Solution

Our network audit uncovered 3 main areas that were causing problems and needed to be worked on and upgraded.
  • File server access
  • Email server setup
  • Remote access services
We migrated from Windows 2003 file services for macintosh to ExtremeZ-IP. This provided file services to clients in a truly compatible way to OSX clients. Speed was increased by 500% and there were no more issues with filenames that contained
characters that the old windows system could not understand.

We implemented Exchange 2007 as the email server for the company, for the PC users we chose Outlook 2007 and for the mac users we chose Entourage 2008.
These products in combination enabled true collaboration between all users - they could see each others calendars, book meetings and rooms, delegate access to email to covers holidays - non of which they could do before.

The sales team replaced their old Nokia phones with iphones which meant they could see their emails on the go, view and schedule meetings and enter contacts that automatically synchronized to their desktop computers.

We configured a remote access server which enabled selective staff to work from home with full functionality (albeit a little slower).

Both staff productivity and morale improved significantly. Users were no longer plagued with crashes, slow network access and corruption.

The sales team spent more time doing what they do best - selling, they saw their equipment and services as a help instead of a hinderance.

The company management were over the moon, as due to the increased productivity, the cost of the solution was paid for within 5 months.

There was no downtime for the users when the new systems were implemented & most of the work was actioned over a weekend.
