It?s not been much more than a day since jailbreakme.com went live. And now, acording to MacStories, developer have found a way to make Facetime work over a 3G connection. Currently Facetime should only work over a WiFi connection, which is often cited as a limitation of the service. what?s the point in a mobile if it cant truly be mobile.
But jailbreakers aren?t the first to access Facetime over 3G. Fring was in fact the first app to feature this, and it didn?t go down too well. The sudden surge in 3G video calling bandwidth meant Fring had to temporarily decrease it?s service to Skype users. This caused an uproar at Skype, which led to them pulling out of Fring and threatening legal action. fring still provides video chat over 3G, but it?s now painfully apparent that giving every one with an iPhone 4 this ability will be nor small task. The relatively small amoutn of users who will jailbreak means that the affect on bandwidth should be fairly insignificant. In the US, AT&T are already struggling with bandwidth congestion and can well do without a rise in video chat over 3G connections. AT&T haven?t made any comment yet, but I?m sure some kind of counter action will be taken.
