Scott Charney, a Microsoft Senior Executive, suggested that virus-infect PCs should be quarantined and denied access to the internet.

At the International Security Solutions Europe (ISSE) Conference in Berlin, Charney put forward this approach as a way to address botnets and other malware. The approach works much like a quarantine for infectious diseases would. In a company blog post Charney explains that automatic patches, AV, and firewalls just aren?t enough: "Despite our best efforts, many consumer computers are host to malware or are part of a botnet. "Bots," networks of compromised computers controlled by hackers, can provide criminals with a relatively easy means to commit identity theft and also lead to much more devastating consequences if used for an attack on critical government infrastructure or financial systems."

He uses Government schemes to vaccinate/quarantine people in order track and control the spread of infectious diseases as an example of a method that could be applied to PCs and viruses. "Simply put, we need to improve and maintain the health of consumer devices connected to the Internet in order to avoid greater societal risk. To realize this vision, there are steps that can be taken by governments, the IT industry, Internet access providers, users and others to evaluate the health of consumer devices before granting them unfettered access to the Internet or other critical resources."

The main area of infection that Microsoft want to tackle is the growing army of robot PCs. Botnets are networks of infected PCs that "bot herders" or "bot masters" control. These networks can comprise of thousands and in some cases millions of compromised windows machines. these machines are used to distribute adware, spyware, spam emails and launch DDoS attacks. Microsoft announced earlier in the year that along with industry partners they successfully executed a take down of the waladec spambot. At the time Microsoft also stated that they intended to be "even more creative and aggressive in the fight against botnets and all forms of cybercrime."

But the post has been met by a some what angry backlash. It seems that some people do not have much confidence in Microsoft’s proposal. With one commenter saying: "If Microsoft isn’t competent enough to make software that is safe, how are they going to be able to make an Internet quarantine that works?". Personally I think Microsoft’s proposal is a good one, but implementing and making it an industry standard seems a long way off.

Microsoft is due to open it?s biggest store yet later this year in Mall of America. Not only is it going to be their biggest store but it?s opening up right across from an Apple Store. Is Microsoft gearing up for a head to head battle against Apple? Apple has over 300 stores across the world, so if they are, they?ll need to pull the big guns out.

This will be the 5th Microsoft store in America, with 2 in California, 1 in Colorado and one in Arizona. The state of Minnesota has 5 stores of it own, so this face of at Mall of America should be interesting.

Twincities.com posted photos of the store location in Mall of America, which gives an idea of just how large it will be. It certainly seems to dwarf the competition.

Looks like Microsoft?s best foot is going forwards with this new store location. The Microsoft stores carry all their hardware and electronic products, so you can expect them to show off their latest and greatest. Such as the Xbox 360 slim, Kinect and Windows Phone 7.

Reports are out that Microsoft is planning to unveil it?s slate plans at the NYC press event on the 11th of October.

The events main focus on the 11th will be Windows Phone 7, but sources close to the company have suggested that they will briefly speak about their plans for slates.

Microsoft has received some criticism for it?s slow response to the release of the iPad. Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, said that Windows 7 based slates would be available "as soon as they’re ready" earlier in the year. But it seems that Microsoft officials are finally keen on having an answer to the iPad as soon as possible.

Close work with a number of unnamed OEMs has been done in order to give Microsoft a genuine answer to the iPad. Bernstein Research estimates that the iPad is selling about 4.5 million units per quarter. Microsoft is concerned that this is slowly eating away at Windows sales and the recent notebook boom. The 11th should bring a hint at what will be offered and devices that will be available by Christmas. Ballmer’s talk at the London School of Economics on Tuesday promised that Microsoft will cover all form factors. According to Ballmer "You’ll see slates, but if you want most of the benefits of what a PC can offer, creating, a form factor that has been tuned over years, you’ll see us expand the footprint of what Windows can target", and a promise of slates by Christmas.

HP has been working on a consumer version of it?s slate that will run Windows 7, and will have a TouchSmart interface similar to that of it?s touch desktops. This slate was originally revealed at the beginning of the year, but suffered some set backs and was thought to have been shelved. And with the acquisition of Palm by HP in April it was thought that WebOS would be it?s OS of choice. HP won?t confirm if the Slate is still in the pipeline or not.

It was reported a few days ago that WP7 would be unveiled by Microsoft on the 11th October in New York. But now that?s all been made official, as Microsoft have posted details of the event on their website that confirm the date as the 11th and also gives details of the agenda.

The event is scheduled to be held from 3-4:30PM at the NYC Microsoft Technology Centre. The announcement also confirms that T-Mobile will be their launch partner. The announcement says: "enjoy light snacks, beer and wine while you get hands on for an exclusive showing of T-Mobile powered Windows Phone 7 devices and an early preview of some of our applications that will be available for launch".

With the RTM of the final build of Windows Phone 7 the company claimed they were ?ready?. Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Windows Phone engineering, Terry Myerson, says the company is just getting started: "This has been one of the most incredible product development efforts I?ve ever been a part of." Workers at Microsoft celebrated WP7 going to RTM with a funeral for the iPhone and Blackberry on campus in Redmond.

Microsoft have announced that the UK?s MSN Music service is to integrate with Zune music ecosystem when it?s rolled out in the UK next month.

According to Microsoft ?MSN Music will create links in its music editorial to related content on Zune.net, giving users quick and easy access to the music they care about in the Zune Marketplace?. MS also highlights the fact that there is a ?natural synergy? between the two services, there fore making sense to integrate them.

The MSN Music service provides the latest news and exclusive content from the music industry, with interviews, videos and downloads. MSN Music also allows users to purchase music and listen to it from any location. Microsoft have said that ?existing customers of the MSN Music download store will be invited to discover the new service?.

MSN Music?s, Steven Wilson-Beales has said the following about the integration:

?people will now be able to consume a range of music news, videos, spotlights on new music and artist information and have at their fingertips, the ability to purchase and listen to the music they want, wherever they want. The integration between MSN and Zune Pass will allow subscribers to log in from any supported web browser for unlimited access to a catalogue of 7 million songs in the Zune Marketplace.?

So it seems that Microsoft is keen keep MSN Music as the primary place for users in the UK to get their music fix, but to have Zune there for streaming and buying music.

There?s been no official date given for when this integration will start, but that smart guess is that it will happen when Zune arrives in the UK.

MSN in the UK is the largest news and entertainment portal with 25 million new user every month. That amounts to 58% of the UK?s internet audience. This massive user base will help to advertise and popularize Zune.

When Zune finally arrives, not only will UK users be able to buy music on an ad-hoc basis but they can also subscribe to the service. A fee of ?8.99 a month will give access to over 7 million songs that can be instantly streamed via the Zune PC software, Windows Phone 7 devices, Xbox 360 or any internet browser.

Outlook 2010 has allot of new features, one of which is the nifty People Pane. This feature allows users to see an over view of an e-mails sender. The pane provides information about appointments, recent e-mails, and a picture of the sender.

The pane can also use the Outlook Social Connector to populate the contact information of senders you know from social networks like Facebook. The connector compares the information of a friend from Facebook with the information stored in Outlook, and then adds and organizes the this information in the people Pane appropriately. If a picture is not associated with the sender or the connector can?t find one a default silhouette is used.

The funny thing is, that silhouette looks like it?s taken from a picture of Bill Gates. And according to ArsTechnica, the silhouette is from a picture of Bill Gates that was taken moments after he was arrested during a traffic stop in the 70s.

Was this a practical joke on Bill Gates by his developers, or did he have a hand in it himself. It makes you wonder, could the default silhouette on Facebook be one of Mark Zukerberg.

With the launch of Google instant earlier in the week, web enthusiasts are now looking to Bing for a counter response.

Long Zheng, of I started something.com, developed a tool back in 2009 that used Bing?s public API?s that gave it an instant live search. And according to Zheng this tool could have been easily added to Bing using a simple JavaScript, but for some reason, never happened.

A year later and Bing hasn?t gone for any type of instant search feature. But, at Apple?s WWDC this year Bing showed off a new version of it?s site that?s powered by HTML5 with some very impressive new features.

The early version of future Bing gave a smooth transition between queries and results, which was close to instant search. The HTML5 version also included a quick tab preview for weather, maps and other features when hovering over menus, reducing the number clicks and page loads.

Bing HTML5 could be the counter response to Google?s instant search that people have been expecting. And it would make sense for the launch to coincide with that of IE9.

Reports are out that Microsoft will start the launch Windows Phone 7 at an event in New York on October the 11th.

A report on Pocket Lint, a UK tech blog, suggest that Microsoft is holding a lavish launch party in New York on the 11th of October. This is exactly one week after Steve Ballmer is due to hold a special event in London for Windows Phone 7.

Microsoft?s launch plans were originally revealed in early August by Microsoft COO, Kevin Turner. It was confirmed by Turner that WP7 would be available in October for Europe and November for the US. HTC, LG, Samsung , Asus and Del are all expected to launch devices with the Windows Phone 7 platform. Recent FCC filings have revealed a number of devices using WP7 for HTC and Asus, all are expected to arrive at the end of October. The report on pocket Lint confirms it will be soft, meaning the actual devices will follow later.

The Final build of Windows Phone 7 went RTM recently. Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Windows Phone engineering, Terry Myerson, said: "This has been one of the most incredible product development efforts I?ve ever been a part of". Microsoft have claimed they are ?ready?, and the recently published advert come with the tagline "the revolution is coming".

However, Microsoft has not confirmed the date, stating: "We do not comment on rumour or speculation".

Windows Phone 7 Has been officially finished and released to manufacturing by Microsoft.

Microsoft’s hardware and carrier partners have received the final build and code so that they can integrate their own software and services before devices are shipped later this year. There have however, been several last minute changes to the platform:

  • Facebook contacts filtering in the People hub
  • Facebook "Like" capability from the People hub
  • Various user interface updates, including a new Search button in the contacts list.
  •

Windows Phone 7 has to be the most thoroughly tested mobile platform to come out of Redmond. Microsoft say that they had nearly 10,000 devices running daily automated tests, 0.5 million hours of active self-hosting use, over 3.5 million hours of stress test passes and a whopping 8.5 million hours of fully automated test passes. Added to all that Microsoft have had thousands of early adopters and independent software vendors testing WP7 and giving feedback.

Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Windows Phone engineering, Terry Myerson said:

"We are ready. This has been one of the most incredible product development efforts I?ve ever been a part of. Today?s milestone is exciting not just because of what we?ll deliver to customers later this year, but how it sets us up for success over the long term in the mobile space? we?re really just getting started."

Windows Phone 7 is expected to drop in October for Europe and November for the US.

Microsoft is planning to support push for Hotmail on a wide range of mobile devices including the iPhone, Windows Phone devices and Android. It?s due for release on Monday.

Push support will be using the exchange active sync technology, which is currently available on nearly 300 million phones. Push e-mail allows synchronisation of e-mail between a device and the web. Calendars and contacts can also be synchronised. Microsoft?s plans were originally revealed in April this year.

Microsoft revealed the launch date earlier this week in an interview with CNET News.com. Dharmesh Mehta gave Monday the 30th of August as the launch date.

When it comes to accessing Hotmail, Microsoft have traditionally taken the closed door approach compared to it?s rivals. Google already offers Exchange ActiveSync for Gmail, so it looks like Microsoft is aiming to match Google?s Gmail service and then some. Hotmail?s new features include a single contact list, showing all online contacts including those on social networking services. Active Views has also been introduced to integrate the content and functionality of websites directly into e-mails received by users. Which means you can view content from websites from within an email rather than having to open a browser.

The support foe active sync has been slowly introduced by Microsoft over the past month. In a message to those trying to join the service, Microsoft explained: "To get Hotmail on-the-go, you recently tried to set up a service called ActiveSync from your mobile device. We are really glad that you’re interested, but we had so many sign-ups that we had to temporarily stop accepting new ones."

When the service goes live on Monday, you will be able to select the Exchange option on your mobile and point to m.hotmail.com.
