Microsoft have revealed plans for Exchange 2010 service pack 1. The beta version will be available at the end of June. It will contain all previous rollups and also some new enhancements including:

Archiving and discovery enhancements

Outlook Web App (OWA) enhancements

Mobile user and management improvements

Added UI for management tasksAnd the PST file management will have some changes too, which are detailed on The Microsoft Exchange Team Blog :

“adding the flexibility to provision a user’s Personal Archive to a different mailbox database from their primary mailbox. This means your organization can now more easily implement separate storage strategies (or tiered storage) for less frequently accessed e-mail. And, we didn’t just stop there! We’ve also added new server side capabilities so you can import historical e-mail data from .PST files, directly into Exchange, as well as IT pro controls to enable delegate access to a user’s Personal Archive.”

IT pros will be very pleased with the improvements as they are things that have been requested since its release.

The Outlook Web App is getting a UI makeover. Which will make it better suited to net book monitors and much cleaner and faster to use. It will also provide users with the ability to share their calendar on the internet with anonymous users. A returning feature will allow users to theme their web interfaces, and place the reading pane where ever? they want. The MS Exchange Team say that they have made all these changes in response to user feedback you can get more info from their blog here.

Some of the enhancements included in this new service pack:

Exchange Backup Functionality:
Exchange Server 2007 SP2 includes a new VSS plug-in for Windows Server Backup to support Exchange backups. Once you install SP2 you can use the standard Windows backup tool to backup and restore your Exchnage 2007 databases. The new VSSplugin is a single .EXE file called WBBExchange.exe and is automatically installed by SP2 on all Exchange 2007 Servers with the mailbox role installed.

Enhancments to the Auditing system:
There is a new Exchange Auditing events and audit log repository that allows admins to audit the key events relating to their Exchnage servers more easily. This dedicated audit log repository provides much more granularity and performance over exiting methods.

Public Folder Quota Management:
Added cmdlets now allow for easier management of Public folders. These new cmdlets remove the dependancy on the old public folder distributed authoring and versioning administration tools.

Centralised Organisational Settings:
A number of new cmdlet parameters have been added to assist in the management of a number of Exchange organisation settings, these include the following.

Add-AvailabilityAddressSpace

Export-Mailbox

Import-Mailbox

Move-Mailbox

New-ActiveSyncVirtualDirectory

New-ManagedFolder

Restore-Mailbox

Set-ActiveSyncVirtualDirectory

Set-CASMailbox

Set-IMAPSettings

Set-OABVirtualDirectory

Set-OrganizationConfig

Set-POPSettings

Set-PublicFolder

Set-TransportConfig

Test-ActiveSyncConnectivity

Test-OwaConnectivity

Test-WebServicesConnectivity
