Developers at Microsoft have enhanced the street view functionality in Bing Street Side. The new tool is called Street Slide. Typically a street view is created by putting photos side by side and then scrolling through them. Panning and Zooming is possible but isn?t really seamless.

Street Slide is Microsoft’s plan to change all this. MIT?s Technology review has reported Street Slide as a way to move down a city street by using a connected string of panoramic views. There is no interference the rotate and zoom features in Bing Streetside, switching between the two modes is seamless. This creates a more flexible and practical first person navigation. Bing maps data will also keep up with the navigation as you ?slide? across a street, giving you street addresses, shop names and ratings as normal in Bing Maps or Streetside. As the panoramic view is widescreen, there is plenty of space above and below the image for data and advertisements.

Street Slide will be exhibited by Microsoft at the upcoming computer graphics conference SIGGRAPH 2010, in Los Angeles, CA.

You can get a look at it here.

The iPhone 4 will be released in 17 more countries this Friday. Canada is one of them, and they will be receiving the iPhone 4 in an unlocked state for use with any carrier. The same will apply to other parts of the world.

Customers in Canada will be able to buy an unlocked iPhone 4 from Apple on Friday and then shop around to find a call plan that suits them. Canada?s three big carriers Telus, Bell and Rogers will all be selling the iPhone 4 including Micro-SIM cards for $5 – $10 each. Pre-paid contracts will also be usable.

In the US users are restricted to to one carrier, AT&T, who have an exclusive contract with Apple. The iPhone 4 is sold locked in the US, but it has recently been made legal to jailbreak devices. Which begs the question, what?s the point in an exclusive contract with AT&T or locking devices.

The iPhone 4 launched on the 24th of June in the US, France, Germany, UK, and Japan. And is to be released in 17 more countries including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

It seems plausible that Apple delayed it?s Canadian launch to prevent customers in the US from getting an unlocked iPhone by crossing the border.

Despite the issues with the antenna on the iPhone 4, it doesn’t;t seemed to have stopped 1.7 million people form buying the device so far.

An unpatched shortcut handling flaw in Windows has begun to be exploited by the infamous Zeusbot. The flaw was first used by the sophisticated Stuxnet worm to target SCADA-based industrial control and power plant systems.

Attacks began appearing last week, and now the criminals behind the Zeusbot toolkit have joined in. The toolkit is used frequently to steal back login details from compromised systems.

the appearance of Zeus strains taking advantage of the flaw was first reported by F-Secure. E-mails posing as security messages from Microsoft are infected with the Zeusbot. The e-mails contain Zip attachments that dump the malicious payload onto systems once unzipped.

Other viruses have also joined in the exploitation, including the polymorphic Sality virus. Trend Micro have picked up variant strains of Zeus and Sality, while McAfee report the Downloader-CJX Trojan as having begun to exploit the bug too. So it seem inevitable that even more malware will start targeting the Windows hole.

the good news is that the all attackers a re currently using the same exploit method which makes it easier to block. A temporary work around has been provided by Microsoft until a full patch is released. Sophos have released a Shortcut exploit protection tool, which sys admins can obtain free of charge regardless of what AV they are using.

You can read more about the exploit in a previous blog here.

A new policy change has been announced by the U.S. Government Library of Congress Copyright Office allows owners of electronic devices to break it?s security protections, and allow unauthorized code and programs to be runs on it?s OS.

The decision came earlier today as The Library of Congress Copyright Office reviews and authorizes exemptions for electronic devices and copyright material to ensure that the current law allows for lawful use of non-infringing use of copyright-protected material.

Which is great news for every one in the US, particularly those with an iPhone. The law now makes it legal to jailbreak an iPhone or unlock other devices. Programs like Cydia (a software application for iOS that lets a user browse and download applications for a jailbroken iPhone) to run on a device without the potential fro prosecution. Mobile phones can be legally unlocked so that they can be used with any carrier.

This new law will open the way mobile devices are used in the US, the law allows the following:

  • Allow owners of used cell phones to break access controls on their phones in order to switch wireless carriers.
  • Allow people to break technical protections on video games to investigate or correct security flaws.
  • Allow college professors, film students and documentary filmmakers to break copy-protection measures on DVDs so they can embed clips for educational purposes, criticism, commentary and non-commercial videos.
  • Allow computer owners to bypass the need for external security devices called dongles if the dongle no longer works and cannot be replaced.

HP is in the process of bringing out a tablet based on Microsoft?s Windows 7 OS. However, CNBC has been told by , Executive Vice President Todd Bradley that HP will "exclusively use its webOS" for the their line of new Smatphones.

In April 2009, HP purchased mobile giant Palm, since then there has been allot of speculation about what they plan to do with it. Web OS, which was found on the palm pre, was greeted positively when released but somehow seemed to fade into obscurity after that. HP quickly snapped up Palm when it went on sale but hasn?t really done much with it since.

HP said previously that they were planning on using WebOS in a line of smart-printers and will be likely to maintain their mobile relationship Microsoft. But it now seems that they are aiming on being their own top shelf competitor in the Smartphone market, with Google and Apple in their sights.

HP and Dell have pretty much always used Microsoft?s platforms for their mobile devices. But with Dell going over to the Google side and HP bringing back WebOS, Microsoft will be more reliant then ever on LG?s partnership.

The Smartphone is already a crowded one with iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7, webOS and even RIM with OS6 all fighting for dominance. Can Microsoft pull the rabbit out of the hat with WP7 and push it to the top spot.

This announcement from HP also completely contradicts CEO Mark Hurd?s earlier stance:

"We didn?t buy Palm to be in the smartphone business. And I tell people that, but it doesn?t seem to resonate well. We bought it for the IP. The WebOS is one of the two ground-up pieces of software that is built as a web operating environment? We have tens of millions of HP small form factor web-connected devices? Now imagine that being a web-connected environment where now you can get a common look and feel and a common set of services laid against that environment. That is a very value proposition."

Invites are now being sent to inboxes to get the Office 2011 beta for OS X. The build number is 100709 and the invite states: ?The Office for Mac 2011 beta is closed to the public, which means ALL Office 2011 tools and features are confidential and proprietary to Microsoft. By participating in the beta, you consent to a non-disclosure agreement which includes all forms of communication including print, broadcast, electronic, Internet publications, social media networking sites, blogs, and verbal disclosure. The NDA will not lift until the product is public later this year. We will update on timing closer to the date.?

Currently in the beta testing phase, a beta 3 update was released by Microsoft in late May. This included new splash screens, icons and tweaks to the toolbars and ribbons. Office for the Mac won?t have all the components as office pro plus for Windows. It will only support Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Office 2011 will bring outlook to the Mac for the first time and will be similar in appearance and functionality to Outlook 2011 on Windows and will have a Mac inspired ribbon.

It will also support multiple document editing, the same document can be edited at the same time without users receiving a lockout notice. Office for Mac 2011 will also include document sharing across OS versions through SharePoint, SkyDrive and web apps. The official word from Microsoft is that Office for Mac 2011 will be available just in time for Christmas.

Microsoft has reported a strong revenue for the 4th quarter thanks to Windows 7. They have also announced that windows 7 has hit the 175 Million mark for licenses sold.

Windows 7 was released to manufacturing one year ago, Microsoft say it?s the fastest selling operating system in history and has projected to sell 300 million by the end of the year.

Windows 7 success began before it was even widely available. Released for retail in October 2009 it was received with much praise. It?s now running on 16% of all PCs globally and is likely to overtake Vista?s market share in in the next few weeks. It?s not just Windows 7 that has seen success, Internet Explorer 8 has seen a large uptake. It still maintains the most popular slot on the browser market, and IE9 is not too far away from being released.

A Safari vulnerability revealed today can be exploited in order to steel users address book contact details through the autofill feature.

Apple was apparently notified about the vulnerability a month ago by blogger Jeremiah Grossman. Details that can be stolen from a users contacts include names, place of work, address and e-mail address.

The malicious code is powered by JavaScript and scans autofill information and anything that can be, without alerting the user. Grossman posted proof of concept code to a site that scans users info and displays what it has captured to the user.

It?s possible that the code could be hidden in websites via advertisements or other means, stealing a users information with out them knowing it. The code however, can?t scan numbers so your phone number is safe.

The vulnerability can only be exploited on Safari 4.x and 5.0 and takes information from the Address Book located on a Mac. Which is something users have to fill out when they boot up for the first time. So the code does struggle to capture information from Safari when run on a Windows machine but does still grab some.

The vulnerability is easily blocked, just turn of autofill. Users should do this until Apple provides a fix.

38 US states have formed a coalition to probe Google on how the software that captured payload data from WiFi networks was included in their Street View cars.

attorney general of Connecticut, Richard Blumenthal, said in a statement issued Wednesday:

?We are asking Google to identify specific individuals responsible for the snooping code and how Google was unaware that this code allowed the Street View cars to collect data broadcast over WiFI networks. Information we are awaiting includes how the spy software was included in Google’s Street View network and specific locations where unauthorized data collection occurred.?

According to Blumenthal 38 states and the District of Columbia have joined the probe. Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, and Texas are on the coalition’s executive committee. The aim of the investigation is to determine whether any laws have been broken and whether legislation is needed to prevent similar events from occurring again.

The data was captured over a period of three years. During this period Google asserted that only network SSIDs and device MAC addresses were being collected. In May this year Google admitted that the Street view cars had collected payloads from unencrypted Wi-Fi networks that were within range. But that the software responsible was included by accident. The company reasserted this claim on Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for Google wrote in an e-mail: ?As we?ve said before, it was a mistake for us to include code in our software that collected payload data, but we believe we did nothing illegal. We?re continuing to work with the relevant authorities to answer their questions and concerns.?

Blumenthal added, in his statement: ?Google’s responses continue to generate more questions than they answer.?

There have been at least 7 civil lawsuits filed against Google over the WiFi grab. Canadian, Australian and European agencies have also opened investigations. The FTC has been called on by American Lawmakers to start it?s own enquiry. Blumenthal has said he is still recruiting other states to join the coalition.

A temporary Fixit was released on Tuesday by Microsoft as a workaround for a critical unpatched Windows Shell vulnerability.

The security bulletin issued on Friday warned users of a 0-day vulnerability in the Windows Shell. An error in the shell when parsing shortcuts (.lnk) causes the vulnerability. Microsoft has assured it has “seen only limited, targeted attacks on this vulnerability.”

The Fixit removes the icons on the task bar and start menu and replaces them with a blank sheet icon.

    Before:

    beforefixit

To exploit the vulnerability successfully users must have inserted removable media (With AutoPlay enabled) or browse to the removable media (with AutoPlay disabled). The vulnerability may also be possible with network shares and WebDAV shares. The exploit affects all Windows versions since XP. Windows 2000 and XP SP2 are also affected but are no longer supported. The Fixit provided by Microsoft prevents the Vulnerability from being exploited. Reports of attacks on this flaw are still being investigated by Microsoft. The next patch Tuesday isn?t until August 10th, an out of band security patch isn?t out of the question.

Windows Phone 7 has finally gone into technical preview, which means the mobile operating system is in the final furlong.

The technical preview will be given to developers on prototype devices by manufacturers including Samsung, Asus and LG. Microsoft hopes are pinned to it?s new mobile OS to be a strong competitor in the Smartphone market, challenging the like of Apple and RIM.

Microsoft have said that over 1000 employees have been testing the OS for ?usability, battery life, network connectivity, and many other metrics,? which have made the technical preview edition of WP7 a "surprisingly high quality" OS.

Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Windows Phone Engineering, Terry Myerson, wrote: "We are certainly not done yet – but the craftsmen (and women) of our team have signed off that our software is now ready for the hands-on everyday use of a broad set of consumers around the world – and we’re looking forward to their feedback in the coming weeks, so that we can finish the best Windows Phone release ever together. We’re almost there – but there is much work left to do. Together, with our early adopter customers, developers, OEM, and mobile operator partners we are in the home stretch."

You can take a look at some of the high profile blogs Microsoft have cited here, here and get a look at their demo here. The final launch of Windows Phone 7 is expected to come at the end of this year, just in time for Christmas.

Steve Jobs made a point of making it ?clear? that other phone have similar issues with their antennas too. He announced this at the iPhone 4 conference on Friday. Nokia and RIM have since released statements that rebuke Jobs? claim.

Nokia?s statement made it clear that they ?prioritize? antenna design and function over aesthetics, ensuring that customers have the best reception possible at all times.

"Antenna design is a complex subject and has been a core competence at Nokia for decades, across hundreds of phone models. Nokia was the pioneer in internal antennas; the Nokia 8810, launched in 1998, was the first commercial phone with this feature.
Nokia has invested thousands of man hours in studying human behaviour, including how people hold their phones for calls, music playing, web browsing and so on. As you would expect from a company focused on connecting people, we prioritize antenna performance over physical design if they are ever in conflict.
In general, antenna performance of a mobile device/phone may be affected with a tight grip, depending on how the device is held. That’s why Nokia designs our phones to ensure acceptable performance in all real life cases, for example when the phone is held in either hand. Nokia has invested thousands of man hours in studying how people hold their phones and allows for this in designs, for example by having antennas both at the top and bottom of the phone and by careful selection of materials and their use in the mechanical design."

Nokia seem to have quite nicely found the balance between form and function. Signal quality is maintained and their design goals are upheld.

RIM, makers of Blackberry, have released a similar statement dismissing Apple?s claim that signal degradation is common among Smartphone’s.

"Apple’s attempt to draw RIM into Apple’s self-made debacle is unacceptable. Apple’s claims about RIM products appear to be deliberate attempts to distort the public’s understanding of an antenna design issue and to deflect attention from Apple’s difficult situation. RIM is a global leader in antenna design and has been successfully designing industry-leading wireless data products with efficient and effective radio performance for over 20 years. During that time, RIM has avoided designs like the one Apple used in the iPhone 4 and instead has used innovative designs which reduce the risk for dropped calls, especially in areas of lower coverage. One thing is for certain, RIM’s customers don’t need to use a case for their BlackBerry Smartphone to maintain proper connectivity. Apple clearly made certain design decisions and it should take responsibility for these decisions rather than trying to draw RIM and others into a situation that relates specifically to Apple."

RIM?s to the point statement pretty much condemns Apple?s external antenna as an ineffective design, points out that their phones do not need a case to maintain signal and maintains that Apple should take responsibility for their mistakes.

Both companies have asserted that their own processes do not cause the same issue?s with their devices as found on the iPhone 4. But Nokia seem to have forgotten that they did indeed suffer from signal degradation with the E71.

Steve Jobs made optimistic announcements about Apple?s sales figures, and then denied that the iPhone 4 is the only phone having signal issues. He went on to claim that any phone will lose signal if held in a certain way. Apparently, Apple have done internal tests with other phones that prove the iPhone 4 is not the only device to suffer from the ?Death Grip?. And that the display of the signal bars was a misrepresentation of the actual signal strength, making the drop look more drastic that it really was. The recent software up date has fixed that.

AppleCare has logged that only 0.55% of users have complained about the signal issue according to Jobs. He feels that the media is blowing the issue out of proportion, and that customers are happy. Return rates for the iPhone 4 are 1/3 less than for the previous iPhone. He did admit that that the iPhone 4 drops more calls than the 3GS, but that?s nothing to do with the antenna design. according to Jobs, when people bought the 3GS more of them also bought cases, hence they experienced less call drop out.

At the end of the conference Jobs announced that free bumpers will be issued to users buy a phone before Sept. 30th. If you bought a case you are entitled to a refund. According to financial analysts the bumpers will cost Apple $45 million.

Apple?s stock has been up and down since the conference, it now seems to be on the up. Jobs also advertised the other products Apple have in their line up, ending the conference on an optimistic note.

In the Q&A after the conference Jobs said that the reason why the death grip couldn’t be done on campus is that it has very good coverage, “We have both an AT&T and Verizon tower on campus.” This has sparked much speculation as to whether or not Apple are giving the iPhone line to Verizon.

Jobs also denies Bloomberg?s claim that he had been told about the antenna issue by a high ranking antenna designer, and that he has spoken with the engineer who agrees it?s false.

When asked if he will apologize to investors, he responded by saying that if the price drops by $5 he won?t owe them one. He did say however, that he is deeply sorry about the issues users are having, but that they will experience the same thing with other phones. The offer of a free case shows that Apple cares about their customers.

Apple announced on Friday that free cases aill be given to those users suffering from the iPhone 4 antenna issue.

Apple will give free cases to all customers who buy an iPhone before the 30th Sept 2010. If you?ve already bought a bumper you can get a refund. Apple has not been able to make enough bumpers for all those who have purchased an iPhone 4, so some cases will be sourced from third party manufacturers. There will be now hardware fix, just free cases.

If you want to claim you free bumper you?ll need to register through the Apple website. The site is expected to go live at the end of this week.

For those who are not happy with this solution, Apple is offering a full refund. Phones must be returned undamaged and within 30 days of purchase.

So, the answer everyone has been waiting for almost a month for is a free case for your phone?

iOS 4.0.1 for the iPhone and iOS 3.2.1 for the iPad are currently rolling out to devices. iTunes will be prompting users to download the latest update for their mobile OS. The full 4.1 version is expected to be released later this quarter. However this incremental release should solve some issues iOS 4.0 users are experiencing. Weighing in at 579MB, it?s a biggey for a minor release.

The iOS 4.1 beta has been reported by users to not fix the signal issue it was though it would do on the iPhone 4, but just the bar representation on screen.

The update for the iPad is also out, which addresses a number of issues including the WiFi connectivity issue. Bellow is a list of what it will address/add:

    - Improved Wi-Fi connectivity

    - Fixed an issue that could prevent copy and paste of single-page PDF attachments in Mail

    - Addressed an issue that could cause video playback to freeze

    - Improved reliability of video-out when using iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter

    - Added Bing as an option for Safari’s search field

Bloomberg has reported that chief engineer Ruben Caballero, Apple?s senior antenna expert and chief engineer, had informed Steve Jobs of the reception issue early on in the phones design. Bloomberg’s source has remained anonymous. The external antenna of the iPhone 4 was a controversial design statement. Apple?s innovation would make for a lighter thinner phone, and gave a unique look setting it apart from other Smartphones on the market. But it seems that they are now paying the price for this.

Bloomberg has apparently tried to contact Apple about the issue being known to them early on. They were told that Caballero would not be allowed to speak with them on the issue.

This latest bit of bad news will only add to the mounting pressure on Apple to act. Apple?s image is certainly looking more and more tarnished, which for a company that prides themselves on it, is not good news. It will be most interesting to see what today’s conference will bring.

A senior employee at Microsoft has compared Apple?s issues with the iPhone 4 to their own Vista disaster.

Vista suffered from allot of issues and was labelled as Microsoft’s worst OS yet. The general feeling though, is that Vista was rushed. Windows 7 is what Vista should have been.

Kevin Turner, Microsoft’s chief operating officer, made a few comments when speaking at Microsoft’s WPC in Washington D.C., that compared the iPhone 4?s reception disaster to the doomed Vista.

"It looks like the iPhone 4 might be their Vista, and I’m okay with that,? He went on to say,  ?One of the things I want to make sure you know today is that you’re going to be able to use a Windows Phone 7 and not have to worry about how you’re holding it to make a phone call."

Apple has still not admitted to an issue with the iPhone 4s hardware. There have been unconfirmed reports that slight adjustments to fix the device have been made on newer units. Apple are still insisting it?s a software issue, and iOS 4.1 beta was released to developer today. But early reports do not look good. Reception is still dropped when the device is held covering the left.

If I were Microsoft, I don?t think I could help but feel a little smug.

Apple has announced that a special conference will be held this Friday in regards to the iPhone 4. No details ahve been released about what will be discussed, but I guess the key points are pretty obvious.

Rumours of a new manufacturing technique are flying around the web that may be discussed. This technique would apply a non conductive coating to the phones external antenna. This might spoil the aesthetics of the phone, but could fix the signal issues.

We now know that the iOS 4.1 beta does not fix the issue. Which, when the update/fix was announced, AppleCare said would not work. So, the word pointless springs to mind.

The invitation-only event on Friday will hopefully see the issue addressed by Apple. And their plans to fix the hardware issue revealed, which could well be a recall of the device.

Analysts have predicted losses of $1.5 billion plus for Apple if they don?t announce a recall and and additional $200 million a day until that announcement is made.
